Nutrition Lab

The Nutrition Lab at our college is a dedicated facility designed to provide students with practical knowledge and skills in the field of human nutrition and dietetics. It plays a vital role in helping nursing and health science students understand the relationship between nutrition, health, and disease prevention.
This well-equipped lab functions like a modern teaching kitchen, furnished with gas stoves, microwave ovens, refrigerators, weighing scales, blenders, cooking utensils, measuring tools, and food models. The setup allows students to engage in the preparation, evaluation, and modification of diets suitable for individuals of all age groups and health conditions.
Key Learning Areas in the Nutrition Lab:
- Assessment of nutritional status using anthropometric measurements such as height, weight, BMI, and dietary recall methods.
- Meal planning for various age groups including infants, children, adolescents, adults, pregnant and lactating mothers, and the elderly.
- Preparation of therapeutic diets for patients with specific conditions like diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, renal disorders, and gastrointestinal issues.
- Calorie and nutrient calculation based on dietary guidelines and individual requirements.
- Demonstration of food preservation techniques and methods for maintaining food hygiene and safety.
- Understanding the principles of balanced diet, food groups, and cooking methods that help preserve nutritional value.
Students gain hands-on experience in designing cost-effective, nutritious, and culturally appropriate diets. Role plays and demonstrations are used to simulate real-life scenarios such as nutritional counseling and patient education. By practicing in the lab, students become well-prepared to educate patients and communities on proper dietary habits and lifestyle modifications.
The Nutrition Lab also supports research and community outreach programs, enabling students to participate in health camps, diet counseling sessions, and nutritional awareness drives. Through such initiatives, they develop a deeper understanding of public health nutrition and its application in real-world settings.
In essence, the Nutrition Lab fosters critical thinking, creativity, and clinical skill development, shaping students into competent nursing professionals who can contribute effectively to individual and community health through proper nutritional care.
